I found a pie chart on Sutter Health that represents how supportive people in the workforce are. You can see that the majority of people support breastfeeding; which means that the people who are causing a controversy are not high in number. Could this mean that breastfeeding in public could slowly become more accepted?
I found an article in Go Fatherhood which explains why some people are uncomfortable breastfeeding. Many people feel uncomfortable because they view the act of breastfeeding as something private and intimate. While I can understand this point of view I personally think that if a person feels comfortable enough to breastfeed in public we should respect that and not give the cold shoulder to these mothers.
After searching the internet for quite a while I realized that it is very hard to find information to support those who are against breastfeeding. There are many different views and feelings that come from people who are against feeding in public. I found a forum on debate.org that shows people's feelings on this issue who are for and also against public breastfeeding. I seem to have found a mix of reasons why people are against it; one being it is viewed as indecent, and two some people actually view this as a sexual act. Do you think these reasons stand strong enough to be against feeding in public?
Another reason some people seem to be against this issue is because breasts have been sexualized so when they see a woman breastfeeding it makes them feel uncomfortable. I found this video of a social experiment that reveals how our culture is okay with sexualizing breasts but not okay with breasts being used to nurture an infant. This is a rather recent experiment that was done last month so I found it interesting to see an updated view on how our culture still stands.

Hi Crystal,
ReplyDeleteThis post was very interesting and insightful, I definitely agree with you and you have made some very good points. I look at our world today and see all these Victoria secret’s adds, not only in stores but on television as well, those adds show plenty of cleavage yet that is way more excepted than a woman feeding her child. Little babies don’t wait for you to be in the right place to eat, they just want it there and now at times, and as a mother you should have that right to take the time to feed your baby no matter where you are at. People should not look down on you or bully you for that either.
This is a very interesting topic. I believe that mothers should not be shamed for public breastfeeding, because some of the most delicate members of our population depend on the nurturing of their mothers. It is sad to know that there are many infants who do not get the care they need because of neglectful parents. Some babies do not have the luxury of being able to breastfeed from their biological mothers because they passed away or are physically are unable to do so. I also know that the simply feeding is not the only thing that is happening as a result of breastfeeding, but there is also an exchange of bonding hormones between mother and child, which is important for their relationship.
ReplyDeleteI am curious to see if there are more facts about the infant-mother relationship, and how big of an impact if an infant is deprived of breastfeeding and/or if the infant has to obtain their nutrients from other sources if the mother cannot provide it.
I think that there is no problem with breastfeeding in public. Women should have to choice of whether or not they want to keep it private or sit on a city bench and feed their child. Breastfeeding is a natural thing and I believe that women have every right to embrace their natural state. Women know when an appropriate place to breastfeed their child. Breastfeeding creates a bond between mother and child. Do you think that the small percentage of people that are against breastfeeding will learn to see the beauty in it?
ReplyDeleteI appreciated your work very thanks
